"Vienna is different!"

Vienna owes its peculiar charm and fascination to its extraordinary ability to combine the nostalgic atmosphere of the imperial era with a highly modern, creative and artistic sensibility. This modernity has not abandoned its history but has sought to preserve, with a sense of responsibility and respect, the cultural and architectural inheritance of the city. Architecturally, the city is dominated by the style of the Danubian Monarchy. There are magnificent buildings of all periods and the spacious urban structure tends to make us forget that we are in the capital of a small modern Republic (Austria has a population of only 8 millions inhabitants) – it is a city that seems to be still be caught in the romance and splendour of its imperial past.

The Habsburgian inheritance and influence is omnipresent – both architecturally and culturally. You can follow the emperors’ steps in Schönbrunn, the summer residence of the Habsburgs. Or you can visit the Hofburg, which until 1918 was the seat of the imperial government, where today treasures such as the “Schatzkammer” are housed.

The many historical buildings of the imperial period make Vienna a town full of beauty and art. There are also many museums and art galleries where one can view many important works of art. For example, there is Art History Museum (Kunsthistorisches Museum) which houses the largest collection of Bruegel’s masterpieces in the world and there is the Austrian Gallery Belvedere which contains the works of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. There is also the Museumsquartier, one of Europe’s greatest cultural complexes, which was opened as recently as 2001. The Museumsquartier is host to the Leopold Museum, which is dedicated to modern Austrian art, and the Museum of Modern Art (Museum Moderner Kunst), which offers a panorama of international and Austrian art in the 20th century.

City of music, art, culture, history and tradition...

Art has always been of the highest importance in Vienna and this tradition continues to inspire local creativity and attracts many foreign artists. Vienna offers to its guests 50 theatres, including three opera houses and two musical halls, 100 museums, famous theatre festivals, musical events and dance shows. All year round Vienna has a packed cultural program that makes it one of the premier European capitals for entertainment and culture.

Vienna is known all over the world as the city of music. There is no other town where so many important composers have lived and worked. There are those who have been born here such as Schubert, Strauss, Schoenberg and Berg and those who chose Vienna as their adoptive home such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler and many others. The Vienna Philarmonic is one of the best orchestras in the world, followed by the Wiener Symphoniker and many other Viennese orchestras. The Wiener Staatsoper is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. As well as that Vienna has two other opera houses. The Wiener Sängerknaben has been entertaining music fans from all over the world for many years. As well as Classical Music, Vienna is known as a great centre for musicals, and the most recent success of Vienna-based electronic music show that this city is at the cutting edge of new musical styles.
